Why WhatsApp photos become blurry β and how to get the originals
by MagazinForYou Redaktion
A photo looks good in chat but suddenly blurry when printed. The reason isn't the printer, but the messenger: almost all of them automatically compress images when sending β sometimes to a tenth of the original file size.
What happens during transmission
To save data volume and server costs, messengers downscale images. Typically, the longest edge is limited to about 1600 pixels and the JPEG quality is reduced. A 4 MB photo can quickly become 200 KB.
The crucial point: this process is irreversible. The image details that have been scaled down are permanently lost. No app and no AI can bring them back β they can only plausibly supplement them, which is not the same thing.
How significant the loss is
- Original from phone: approx. 4000 Γ 3000 px, 3β5 MB β printable up to DIN A3
- After a single messenger send: approx. 1600 Γ 1200 px, 200β400 KB β printable up to approx. 13 cm width
- After multiple forwards: sometimes under 1000 px β only suitable for small illustrations
Particularly insidious: every forward compresses the image again. A picture that has travelled through three chats often shows visible block artifacts on edges and in single-color areas like the sky or skin.
How to send photos loss-free
1. Send as a document instead of an image. In WhatsApp, select the "Document" option via the paperclip icon and choose the photo from your file storage. This preserves the original file.
2. Share a cloud link. Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, or WeTransfer transfer files without alteration. This is the fastest method for multiple images.
3. For Apple devices, use AirDrop. Transfers in original quality including metadata.
4. Create a shared album. With iCloud or Google Photos albums, all participants upload directly β ideal if you're collecting pictures from multiple people.
The right way to ask others
If you're collecting photos for a gift, phrase your request specifically. "Send me the pictures" almost always leads to compressed versions. Better: "Could you upload the photos as a file or via this folder link? They unfortunately become blurry through chat." This short addition saves a lot of trouble later.
Especially if the pictures are to be printed large-format β for example, in a personalized magazine or on a photo poster β this is the most important single step for the final result.
How to recognize compressed images
- File size under 500 KB for a normal photo
- Pixel width under 2000
- Missing capture data β date and location are usually removed when sending via messenger
- Visible blocks when zooming in, especially on sharp edges
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a setting for better quality?
Some messengers offer a quality level like "HD" or "Best Quality". It helps, but doesn't replace sending as a file.
Does this also apply to videos?
Yes, even more so. Videos are usually compressed much more aggressively than photos.
Can you sharpen images again?
Sharpening can emphasize edges, but it can't bring back details. With heavily compressed images, it usually just accentuates the artifacts.
